Over the past 24 months, every time I went past an Apple store, I marveled at how packed they were despite the recession and despite the fact that they are selling premium priced products. Yet, they have produced very well-designed, superior products that are problem-free (at least compared to competing products) that merit the price premium, and as Jobs said in the quote above – they have continued to innovate in the downturn. A natural reaction to fear and uncertainty is to contract and become more careful and conservative, but that’s really a pretty negative response. I have great respect for Apple’s more positive philosophy of innovation, improvement, and new product launches to weather bad economic times.
